Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics Careers Evening

Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics Careers Evening
Dear CSI newsletter subscriber,
We know that many of you are interested in hiring the best and brightest of our University's graduates. Following is an invitation to
Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics Careers Evening
Thursday 5th August
University of Auckland
The University of Auckland Careers Services and the Faculty of Science would like to jointly invite you to an industry based informational event which will be held at 6.00pm on Thursday 5 August at the University of Auckland. It has been designed to target Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics students at undergraduate and postgraduate level, delivering a comprehensive overview of employment opportunities within your field, skills required to secure employment, and emerging careers. The event is a great way to raise your employer profile and publicise your student recruitment programmes, internships and possible thesis projects to potential future employees from a leading university.
The event will begin with an employer panel discussion chaired by a senior academic, to discuss employment trends, skill requirements and preparation for the world of work in this industry, with time for questions and answers from students at the conclusion. This will be followed by an expo-style section with a larger number of employers invited, providing opportunities to network with students, academic staff and others within your field.
We would like you to be present at the expo session, although you would be welcome to attend the panel session beforehand.
Some of the benefits of attending this event are as follows:
- The Faculty of Science is the largest at the University, and we expect around 200 students majoring in Computer Science, Maths and Stats at all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate study to attend
- The event will be free of charge for employers
- It will be well publicised within the Faculty of Science and promoted directly to relevant students through targeted emails and CareerHub
- It is supported by academics and the Science Faculty Manager
- Employer branding to ensure the top students are considering employment in your organisation
We have run four similar events for Science students this year, and we've found that two people is generally what companies send, although some have sent just one, and others have sent several.
You would need to set up at the Engineering School (where the event is being held) about half an hour before the scheduled start. If you intend to attend the employer panel (where a group of employers are asked work-related questions by an academic for an hour, and students get to ask questions), then you would need to arrive around 5.30 as the panel starts at 6. If you attend to skip that and just attend the expo, then you would need to arrive at 6.30 (expo starts at 7).
The expo involves students circulating and asking questions of the companies present. If you have any relevant printed material bring it long, and also any display material such as pull-up stands would be good.
Employers have found the events really good so far, as it gives them a chance to speak to highly motivated students, and also network with other organisations as well as academic staff.
